Gay Marriage
Proposition 8, the California Marriage Protection Act, was approved by voters on Nov. 4, 2008. It reads, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." Passage of Prop.8 has thrown thousands of same-sex unions into doubt. The California Supreme Court, on May 15, 2008, had overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Licenses were issued to same-sex couples beginning June 17.
